Teaching
Learning the flute is a process of wonder and discovery—of music, of yourself! I’m here to help students meet their goals with this spirit of curiosity, whether that’s playing their first note or preparing for music school. Along the way, my aim is to help every student become an empowered musician. An empowered musician makes informed creative decisions, understands the structure and context of what they are playing, collaborates effectively with others, and knows how to keep themselves healthy. In lessons with me, students can expect to build:
Healthy technique and body usage
We’ll work to create a strong foundation of both physical skill and theoretical understanding. With a background in Alexander Technique and endurance sports, I focus on body awareness to prevent injury and increase facility on the flute.
Aesthetic preferences
One of the most exciting parts of studying music is finding your own artistic voice! I’m honored to help my students discover and create their own paths. While most of my training is in Western classical music, I often help my students jump into jazz and pop music too.
Personal skills
We’ll explore many themes that apply to life both in and out of music: how you learn best, assessing strengths and weaknesses, goal setting, using mistakes as a tool for growth, perseverance, and patience.
I grew up with the Suzuki flute method and often incorporate its philosophy (teaching holistically, learning music like a language) into my instruction. I teach in the Boulder and Longmont areas. Any prospective student is welcome to take a free 30 minute lesson with me to see if we’re a good fit.
